Room 212 Begins a New Chapter Under Local Artist Hemali Modha

After more than a decade at the heart of Bristol’s independent art and creative scene, Room 212 is embarking on an exciting new chapter as ownership transitions from its founder, Sarah Thorp, to local artist Hemali Modha.
Established as a vibrant hub for local artists, makers, and designers, Room 212 has played a key role in championing Bristol’s creative talent, showcasing original artworks, prints, gifts, and sustainable products. Under Sarah’s ownership, the shop has become a much-loved institution on Gloucester Road, one of the UK’s most celebrated high streets for independent businesses.
Sarah, who has dedicated the last 12 years to nurturing Bristol’s artistic community, is now stepping back to focus on her recovery following a recent leukaemia diagnosis before continuing with her long-planned move to Cornwall. Reflecting on this transition, she said:
“It’s been an incredible journey growing Room 212 into what it is today. I’m immensely grateful for the support of our artists- many of whom I now call friends – our customers, and the wider Bristol community. I couldn’t have wished for a better person than Hemali to take the reins and continue Room 212’s legacy.”
For many local artists, Sarah’s vision and unwavering support have been instrumental in propelling their careers, enabling them to transition into full-time creative work. Through Room 212, she has provided a vital platform for local artists, helping them showcase and sell their work to a wider audience. Beyond the shop, Sarah’s dynamic energy helped revitalise this section of Gloucester Road, transforming it into a thriving hub of independent businesses.
Hemali Modha, an artist and creative businesswoman, brings a wealth of experience to Room 212. With a background in fine art, she has successfully run a web design agency, a clothing boutique, and her own perfume brand.
On taking over Room 212, Hemali expressed her enthusiasm:
“I’m honoured to continue the incredible work Sarah has done in building such a unique creative space. Room 212 has always been about celebrating independent artists, and I’m excited to build on this foundation, bringing fresh ideas while staying true to the ethos that makes it so special.”
Under Hemali’s ownership, Room 212 will remain a platform for local talent while also introducing much-loved brands from her previous venture, Amulet Boutique. Customers can expect the same welcoming atmosphere, with exciting additions planned in the coming months.
Hemali officially take over April 2025, at which point the shop will close briefly for a small refurbishment. Room 212 will mark this transition with a celebratory event, inviting the community to meet Hemali and discover what’s next for this much-loved creative space. Date to be confirmed.
