I work from imagination to create my own poetic vision of the world around me. Over time, I have developed a number of themes and characters, largely with origins in childhood memory and dream imagery. My subject matter reflects my interest in, myth, folklore, history, magic and fairy tales and my characters express both the light and darker sides of human nature.
At the root of my painting is a fascination with the human condition. I am particularly drawn to extraordinary people with special gifts and I often use archetypes for their powerful symbolism. Animals and birds often appear, expressing the undercurrents of the main drama and act to psychologically balance a painting. Many of my characters are heroic or villainous in nature, some are worldly, others unworldly guardian figures, yet all express states of being that are common.
I am currently among other things, working on a series of portraits collectively called Firework Folk. In these paintings, the protagonists are given characteristics of various types of firework, expressing the often explosive aspects of human nature. I will be showing these Firework Folk for the first time at Room 212. As well as paintings there will a bit of sculpture.
I will be opening Room 212 From Monday 23rd June til Saturday 28th June between 11 am and 4 pm daily, 11 am - 3 pm on Saturday .
