Sally Stanley

Sally Stanley took these photographs of the iconic North Bristol Baths a few days before the pool was closed in October 2005.The local community had run a long campaign to keep it open but this was not to be.

North Bristol Baths were built just before the First World War and the building was rich in architectural detail. There was actually a delay in opening until after WW1 when it became the centre for local activities. Sometimes the pool was boarded over so that films could be shown and dances held.

The pool itself was always busy and is the place many local children learnt to swim. Several schools used it for lessons and competition swimming. There was also a water polo club. It was much loved by the local community.

The swimming pool building is still closed. However, Bishopston Library has relocated to part of the site and opens on May 3rd.
